There are so many new “trendy” restaurants in Jakarta lately that I cannot even keep up. When in 2003 I was so happy to celebrate my birthday at Pizza Marzano, now I get so frustrated in picking a hip place to simply hang out (no offense to Pizza Marzano). Not only that, going to a trendy restaurant can be quite exhausting, because most of the time you need to book the place (effort) and you also kind of feel the need to dress up a little (even though you don’t really have to). However, once in a while a group of people create restaurants that are still cool for hang outs, but very chill. And I am very much grateful for that.
Umabo is a restaurant that just opened at Wijaya. It has a quite simple design, but very comfortable (kind of like Momofuku Ssam Bar in New York, if you have been there). The space is small and rectangular, so it feels intimate. And I also love the sign in the front that gives that sort of old cinema in the States feeling.
The restaurant serves mainly rice bowls, with a little bit of hot dogs and burgers here and there. The food is Asian Fusion, although I think it is leaning more towards Korean. The menu is presented through an iPad, where you can order from as well. Very cool.
That’s my dad, sister and the lovely waiter.
I ordered a bunch of stuff:
Despite the blurry picture (sorry), this loaded fries is actually really good. Has caramelized onions, fried onions, peppers and melted cheese. It’s not as savory as it looks; it’s actually quite light.
This hotdog has cornflakes on it. CORNFLAKES. It’s sweet and crunchy. The sausage itself is okay, but the toppings make it worthwhile.
I believe this one is called Ribs Me Up. Ribs with some vegetables (including eggplant) and runny boiled eggs. I can order this over and over and over again. Definitely getting this one next time I am here.
This is the chicken bowl, but not Chickalicious (forgot to document that one and forgot the name of this one, sorry!). I mean it was good, but I prefer the one before.
The curry rice bowl. This one’s peppery, but still light. The mix of texture is really nice and I always love pineapples in my curry!
Fried bananas. But before you think of anything, the batter of this one is really light and chewy, so it’s nice and different. I actually prefer the fried batter over the actual banana. One complaint is that the ice cream is too little compared to the banana served.
FRIED SNICERSSSSS. A PROPER ONE. OMG MY LIFE IS COMPLETE. THAT IS ALL.
Some corn dish that’s not out yet, but is THE BEST ONE (thank you Fernando!). The toppings complement the corn really well. Even though it looks like it only covers the top part, the rest of the corn is still very flavorful. And notice the cornflakes? I die.
Overall, my dad spent almost Rp 400k (about 35 bucks?) and made four other people (including myself) really happy.
I definitely love this place. Especially since it’s so close to my apartment. I cannot wait to see what else the chefs come up with (especially since that corn thing is coming out soon, hopefully). I recommend that you go here for a good time and a nice full belly afterwards.
