And that’s that. I love that in its first week alone Twitteritos has been a modest success! Thanks to everyone who tweeted us! If you wanna be part of this, just tweet us where you’re eating (please include the city and country to save us the trouble of Googling tee-hee), tell us a little something about the place and include the hashtag #Tasteritos or mention us at @Tasteritos (don’t forget to follow us, too!). It would be awesome if you include a picture!

If you have questions regarding Twitteritos or just Tasteritos in general, don’t hesitate to leave us a message, e-mail us or tweet us. If tweeting isn’t your thing and you’d rather write a review, we’d absolutely love that, too! Just submit an article or e-mail it to us.

Once again, thanks everyone! :)

Sushi platter at Hamada, Plazuela de Iloilo.

It was pretty much mediocre, save for the salmon ones, since salmon is always a safe choice anyways when it comes to sushi.

Bento Buffet at Maki, Iloilo

So last week Poch (one of my roommates) and I went to check out the new Diversion Road branch of Daily Buns, and when we passed by Smallville, we saw the most glorious sign: Bento-Bento Buffet at Maki for only P122.50. I was definitely ready to ditch Daily Buns but the plan was to go to Daily Buns, and we’re trying this new thing where we exercise willpower (haha what). So we made a promise to go to Maki the next Wednesday.

So this is how the buffet goes: you are each given a piece of paper, and you’re suppsed to tick off your choice under each category. For example, under the soup category, you have miso soup and ramen soup. You just tick off one for each category. Then you give back the paper and they just bring you your bento box! Then when you’re done with the first bento box, they give you another piece of paper again and the whole process starts over.

Here’s what I got:

Bento Box 1:
-Miso soup
-Gyoza
-Shrimp tempura
-Tonkatsu
-Crazy Maki (tuna, cucumber, mango)

Miso soup

Gyoza

Shrimp tempura

Tonkatsu

Crazy maki (tuna, cucumber, mango)

Bento Box 2:

-Pork siomai
-Oyster tempura
-Beef yakiniku
-Spicy tuna maki

Here’s what Poch got:

Bento Box 1:
-Ramen soup
-Gyoza
-Veggie tempura
-Chicken yakitori
-Crispy skin pink salmon maki

Bento Box 2:
-Miso soup
-Pork siomai
-Shrimp tempura
-Pork sukiyaki teppanyaki
-Spicy tuna maki

Out of everything I ordered I liked the crazy maki, beef yakiniku and tonkatsu best. I liked the gyoza fine but Poch didn’t. I was more than disappointed with the spicy tuna maki, because it just turned out to be tuna maki that already had wasabi in it. I’m really not a big fan of wasabi, so yeah, didn’t like that one at all.

We could only get two bento boxes because by then my head was spinning; from fullness, I suppose.

Anyhoo, this buffet is only available on weekdays, 11 am-2pm, and 5-8pm. It’s only until the 30th of August so if you want a part of this, better hurry up! Maki is located in Smallville, next to Freska and across Emcor.

Later tater,

Kinokawa, Jakarta

I know it’s near impossible to classify a certain restaurant as the best in any city, but Kinokawa surely is, in my opinion, at the very least one of the best in Jakarta. It is an understated Japanese restaurant located in the parking building of Menara Thamrin, serves a crowd of mainly Japanese expats living in Jakarta, and is well-known for its omakase, or a Japanese degustation set. The twist is that when you order the omakase set, you let the chef decide what he will serve you, and you only stop when you’ve had enough (I stayed til it was closing time. Total of 16 courses. True story). The theme for the omakase that night seemed to be seafood, with its main attraction being the torched tuna belly sushi (it was certainly the best dish out of all the others). An interesting dish though, was *waitforit* fish sperm. Yes. Sperm sac and all. It tastes a bit like cow brains, but.. mushi-er. And the sperm sac *shudders* was surprisingly..large.. in size O_O awkwaaard. I would probably enjoy it more if the waiter hadn’t told us what it was, though.
