Raw Ice Cream Company

There I was, alone in the apartment and food-less, so I decided to go to the Wholefoods market nearby and buy some organic meals/snacks. As I was searching for muesli, I passed by the frozen goods section and decided to check out some healthy ice creams and yogurts.

This is what I stumbled upon:

Raw vegan ice cream.

Now before I start, I gotta say that I am quite judgmental on raw veganism because of this. However, I have always admired raw vegans, because of their commitment on being healthy and ability to resist the cooked food taste. So I am always intrigued to try any alternative food, such as raw vegan products, just to experience how it’s like to do the diet.

Back to the ice cream; I picked the Mint Chip flavor, because I wanted something refreshing. So I took a small pint of the frozen good and happily purchased it.

Got back home, observed the product even more, and this is my review:

Of course, since its raw and vegan, the ice cream doesn’t look as green as the processed ones:

In fact, it looks just like normal vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips.

Looking at the ingredients, the ice cream is basically made out of beans, nuts, water, nectar and salt for taste and the chocolate bits. So no signs of milk whatsoever.

Taste-wise… Well… These are my stream of thoughts:

First impression: “What. The. Fuck. Is. This.”

Second impression (basically second bite): “Okay, fine. I guess it’s not that bad. It kind of tastes like red bean, but it’s supposed to be vanilla. The chocolate tastes like chocolate but the texture is like paper.”

Third impression: “Dear god I really want to like this but I cant. How am I supposed to finish this? Thank god it only comes in a third of the normal ice cream pint.”

Overall, I’m not sure if I would recommend this to people. It is quite of an interesting experience. However, if you don’t feel like spending on something you don’t like, then do not buy this ice cream.

Banana Fritters topped with Vanilla Ice Cream // Hungry Ninja, Iloilo
This was good but just like any other dessert combining the battling forces of hot and cold, it’s really messy to eat. I also suggest sharing this with a friend because I had trouble finishing this off. Plus when it started to fall apart (in the first minute or so), I just lost the will to eat it.
Flavour of ice cream topping varies on availability.

Mo’s Milk Bar, Vosges Chocolate

Bacon chocolate.

It’s the saltiness of the bacon that makes it work. If you think about it, salt and chocolate have been a great combination for years. Chocolate with salted caramel, chocolate-dipped pretzels and chocolate croissants all have some sort of hint of saltiness in them. Even chocolate milks are often mixed with salt (remember that Modern Family episode??).

So, if you think that Vosges’ Mo’s Milk Bar is too weird for you, think again! Remember, it’s just chocolate…. and bacon…. mixed together.

Look at this. Look at this most unassuming of cakes. What is it, you may ask? Why, it’s the chocolate cake from Carlos’! This is most honestly one of my favourite cakes, ever. Top 5, hands down. Just look at how simple it is. One might even say it looks not delicious. Well, let me tell you you’re wrong! It is truly one of the most delicious cakes ever made in the history of cakes.
It’s topped by the most delicious chocolate ganache. Actual ganache, mind you, not just boring old frosting. The cake itself is deliriously moist, which all cakes should be! There is also a layer of this amazing custard in the middle, which seems to be exactly the same as the custard they use in their equally fantastic jelly rolls (which I should show you sometime).
To top it off, this entire cake that’s big enough to satisfy a group of twenty only costs P450! What?! Do I hear ‘bargain’?! Why, yes! It truly is!
So this is a shoutout to my homeboy Carlos’ Chocolate Cake. I implore you that the next time you need a chocolate cake, please, don’t think twice and get this one.
Available at every Carlos’ store city-wide. And by city-wide I mean Iloilo city-wide.

Ben and Jerry’s Red Velvet Ice Cream

This is literally one of the best inventions ever from my buddies Ben and Jerry. Sort of. The fact that I buy at least one B&J pint per week obliges them to be friends with me.

In terms of flavor, it is not very authentic because the ice cream kind of tastes like those strawberry cheesecake ones. But it does have a red velvet aroma, if you know what I’m saying.

But anywhoo…. It’s really good and you should try it.
