(This recipe was written by Gloria Susindra)

Ingredients:

4 cups peeled, sliced peaches

2 cups sugar, divided

1/2 cup water

8 tablespoons butter

1 1/2 cups self-rising flour

1 1/2 cups milk

Ground cinnamon, optional

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Combine the peaches, 1 cup sugar, and water in a saucepan and mix well. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat.

Put the butter in a 3-quart baking dish and place in oven to melt.

Mix remaining 1 cup sugar, flour, and milk slowly to prevent clumping. Pour mixture over melted butter. Do not stir. Spoon fruit on top, gently pouring in syrup. Sprinkle top with ground cinnamon, if using. Batter will rise to top during baking. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes.

Shepherd's Pie Recipe

Serves 3 - 6 people (depending on your appetite!)

Difficulty: Medium

Wow…. Look at that!!

image

Before I start with this, I would just like to thank my friends Gloria Susindra and Hannah Pienknagura for making this delicious dish for me (All the instructions were made by Gloria).

Ingredients:

1 carrot - diced

1 celery - diced

1 onion - diced

2 cloves garlic

pinch thyme

pinch rosemary

5oz ground lamb

5oz ground beef

2 tsp flour

small can of diced tomatoes (or use fresh or both)

1 tbsp tomato paste

splash of red wine

1.5 cup chicken stock

splash Worcestershire sauce

image

image

image

Instruction:

Saute onion, celery, carrot, garlic, thyme, and rosemary until aromatic in either butter or olive oil. Add lamb and beef, saute until browned, add tomato paste and flour. Deglaze with red wine, add chicken stock and canned/fresh tomatoes. Reduce to simmer, cook until almost dry (about 45 mins to an hour). Finish with Worcestershire sauce.

While simmering, make mashed potatoes:

2-3 potatoes, peeled and diced. Place it in a pot of water, bring to a boil.

2 tbsp butter

3 oz parmesan cheese

2-3 oz cream

2 egg yolks

optional: add 1 tbsp of mascarpone cheese
When you pierce a fork through it and the potato slides off, take off from heat. Mash through with a masher or a sieve. Return to heat, cook stirring to take any excess moisture out. Add butter, egg yolk, and cream. Taste for seasoning.

image

Note: my personal favorite way to make mashed potatoes is to make sure that you dice the potatoes all the same size so they cook evenly. Make sure that you check them every so often to make sure they’re not overcooked. Once the potato slides off the fork, take it off the heat. Pushing potatoes through a sieve gives you smooth, creamy potatoes rather than little chunks. Cooking the moisture out of it will make sure you get super fluffy light mashed potatoes. I like mascarpone in it because it adds depth and creaminess.

image

When meat filling is cooked, move to a casserole pan, top with mashed potatoes. Use a fork and swirl tops to create waves, add a little water to the other egg yolk, whisk. Brush the top of the mashed potatoes with egg yolk to help brown. Put back under broil to brown potatoes. Be watchful as it browns quickly.
Serve immediately :)

Thanks again Gloria for writing this post for me!

Even though the instructions were long, making this was not actually complicated. You just have to read through carefully and be patient. My suggestion is to do it with someone else.

I visited this place a long time ago, but never got around to publishing the article for it, so :

Lamb Chops and Mashed Potatoes

Yes, we here at Tasteritos do realize that we don’t post enough recipes, so here’s a super easy (and quick!) one.

image

LAMB CHOPS! Difficulty: [I wouldn’t make it if it were difficult, but this is] Super Easy | Serves up to 4 people [3 if you’re feeling more liberal]

  • 8 lamb chops
  • some rosemary (I used dried, but fresh is preferable)
  • parsley (again, preferably fresh) (I used dried) (I’m too lazy to chop etc blergh)
  • butter
  • salt and pepper

There really is no measurements here… So, what you do is:

  • preheat your oven to the maximum heat (for our oven it was 250*C) for 30 minutes
  • lay out the ‘chops on the greased oven tray
  • spread some herbs on both side of the chops (the amount is really up to you, mine is.. uh.. as seen on the picture)
  • season them with salt and pepper on both sides
  • slab on some butter on one side (not both) of the chops
  • put in oven
  • after 5 minutes, flip each chop over
  • after another 5 minutes, take out of oven
  • eat

YAYY serve that with some mashed potatoes and people will think you’re pro. Look at it.

Metis, Bali

I went here with my family for my mom’s birthday. It kind of reminded me of this other restaurant called Warung, which is also in Bali. I’m not sure whether they renovated Warung and changed it into Metis, or if this is a totally different restaurant. We didn’t quite figure it out. lol sorry.

Anyway, I had the foie gras (essentially!) as a starter, and it was delicious! One of the best I’ve had. It had 4 layers of 2 foie gras and caramelized apples and the combination was heavenly.

image

While most of my family members had that thing above, my dad actually ordered the cold foie gras to share. It was okay. We were never big fans of cold foie gras - it doesn’t have that tastes-like-butter-and-melts-in your-mouth thing. This one was interesting enough because it had wine jelly and nice presentation. I mean look at it.

image

Now this one here was the best thing I’ve had IN THE WORLD! Sadly it was my dad’s main course, so I only tasted a couple of bites. My dad’s meal was a combination of pork meat and potato puree on the side. OH. MY. GOD.  Let me show you the pictures first.

image

image

The pork was really juicy, buttery, and also crispy because of the skin. The potato was creamy. THE BEST MASHED POTATO IN THE WHOLE WORLD I TELL YOU! I’m going to ask my mom to make this for me before I leave for New York. I know it looks like a normal mashed potato in the picture, but the taste was… indescribable.

And these are some other foods we had that night. Enjoy!

Sorry about the quality of the pictures. The restaurant was dark, and I didn’t want to use flash. But I hope you enjoyed this!

Ju Ma Na, Bali

This place is EXPENSIVE! But let me tell you, it is pretty worth it. The restaurant is located at the Banyan Tree resort, which is gorgeous! The interior was mainly white, with some hints of blue and sea-like designs. I sat on a table that was made of a gigantic chuck of polished wood - really pretty.

My family and I had a lot of food, because each of us had an appetizer and main course.

I started my evening with a foie gras, and this was the most interesting foie gras I’ve ever had. Instead of the usual fruits or berries on the side, this foie gras had palm sugar! This and some nuts made it really crunchy. I wouldn’t say that this is the best I’ve ever had, because I’ve had better ones (overall), but Ju Ma Na’s foie gras is definitely memorable.

image

My mom had the lobster cappuccino as a starter - THE BEST THING IN THE UNIVERSE! So the lobster was, I guess, mixed with some kind of liquid, which made it (of course) liquid. And then you are supposed to eat it with that bread on the side, which had something MAGICAL on top. I swear to you, it was OUT OF THIS WORLD. I would come all the way from New York just to eat this again.

image

This was the Caesar salad that my dad had. I loved it! It was so simple, but really tasty. The salad had scallops, which I think was the thing that made it really special. I don’t know. I guess we weren’t really expecting it to be as tasty as the others, that’s why we were really amazed.

image

This is what I had as my main course; risotto with some sea stuff. The white stuff is actually foam, but I wasn’t able to figure out the taste. So for me it was just some random foam on top of my food. It’s sad for me to say I wasn’t very impressed with this food. I think it’s because all the other foods were very fusion-y and had lots of flavors, but not this one. However, I think that this was quite of an interesting take of a marinara risotto, since many restaurants actually serve this meal; instead of just adding shrimps and squids with the rice, Ju Ma Na also added clams, scallops, and even oysters!

image

Duck with foie gras. This was my dad’s.DELICOUS! I wish I ordered this instead of the risotto. But anyway, the duck was cooked medium rare, which was really weird because ducks are usually cooked well done. But it didn’t matter cos the taste was amazing! That blurry chunk on the background was the foie gras, and that orange stuff was orange. Now let me tell you about the orange. It was super soft! I don’t know how they did it, but we were able to eat the skin too! So basically the texture was like jelly. Amazing! The combination of flavors were… Indescribable!

image

Here are pictures of the other food that we had.

We were so lucky because my mom actually went here for work a few months prior (she’s also a food writer, but professional!), so she had met the chef. So when I came here with her and the rest of my family, we were introduced to the chef. He was a really nice and humble guy from Bandung, which is only a few hours away from Jakarta - Indonesia’s capital city. I didn’t expect him to be Indonesian, because not a lot of chefs in high-end restaurants in Bali are Indonesian, especially in the western ones. But I was really impressed by him!

Anyway, I hope you liked this review! Please go to Ju Ma Na if you are in Bali. Even though it is really pricey, I think it’s okay to spend a little more than you would once in a while, especially if the food is worth it!

Biku, Bali

Biku is a place that is famous for its desserts, even though it does serve really good entrees as well. On the website, Biku claims to be a tea house, restaurant, and bookstore. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really nice, with traditional decor, despite the fact that it serves mostly western food.

I came here with my family after a long trip to the northern part of Bali. I had the soft chocolate pudding with ice cream, whereas the others a carrot cake, a pavlova, and a burger. We also had wheat grass shots at the end.

This was my soft chocolate pudding. I like the simplicity of the presentation and also the food itself. The pudding (which is actually the English way of referencing a cake) was really warm and gooey, which was really nice with the ice cream. i actually had the exact same thing the second time I went here, which was only a few days after my first visit!

image

This was the carrot cake my sister had. I actually tried a little of this and it was really nice! What makes this different than any other carrot cakes is the icing. Even though the icing looks like your typical mascarpone frost, it was actually really soft, thick, and buttery. My sister doesn’t usually like to eat, but she really liked this one.

image

My mom had the burger. My dad too. This was a wagyu burger, the kind my dad usually hates, because the meat is too soft, but he really liked this one. My mom thinks that the taste itself was really simple, but the presentation was really nice.

image

image

The pavlova….. The best thing in the world! I swear! My sister ordered this, but I was the one eating it. The meringue was sweet and the fruits were really fresh. The thing that looks like beans/frog eggs come from this fruit that’s similar to dragon fruit, but tropical; in Indonesia it is called Markisa. Overall, it wasn’t too sweet. I liked this a lot because the meringue was firm, but smooth. It had really nice texture. Really really nice.

image

And lastly, definitely lastly, is the wheat grass shot. This is THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD. I hate this with a lot of passion, I swear, but somehow I always end up ordering a lot. Maybe it’s the benefit, maybe its the adrenaline, or maybe I just wanted to compensate for all the junk I had. But the point is, the taste is horrible, but the benefits are great. So you decide whether YOU should have your own wheat grass. And may I suggest that you get the orange to run it with, because the first time I had my wheat grass shot ever, I didn’t get the orange, and the taste of grass actually stayed on my throat the whole day. Bad experience.

So that’s it. I hope you liked my review. If you would like to visit Biku, it is located at:

Nasi Pedas Ibu Andika, Bali

This means Mrs. Andika’s Spicy Rice. This is the best thing I have had in Bali. I swear to you.

Nasi Pedas Ibu Andika (sometimes Andhika) looks like your usual Indonesian street food, but the thing it serves is AMAZING! So what makes it special? Well, what I can tell about Balinese food, or any Indonesian dish in general, is that it has a lot of flavors and combination of food, and they don’t always synchronize. What I mean by this is that because of the mix of extreme flavors, the flavors end up being extenuated. BUT NOT THIS ONE! This spicy rice is really good!

So why is it called spicy rice? Because it is, of course! REALLY SPICY! My youngest sister said, “Nasi Pedas Ibu Andika is good and it’s very good and very spicy; you need to drink a lot.” Without the extra chili sauce (yes, you still get the extra chili sauce), it was already spicy, so you have no idea how it will taste WITH the extra sauce.

The combo includes rice with fried garlic sprinkled on top, chicken with turmeric sauce, salty fishes, water spinach, beef floss, and crispy chicken skin. I LOVE THE CHICKEN SKIN! This is only the best part of the food!

Here are some pictures of (basically) the same spicy rice, from different angles.

So, if you happen to be in Bali, you should stop by this place. It is located at:

Jalan Raya Kuta, Gang Kubu 120C, Kuta

Bali, Indonesia (across the Super Nova Supermarket)
